About this position

[Fully funded ARIES studentship covering Home fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026-27, and a £2,500 research training and support grant. Limited international fee waivers available; relocation and living costs are not covered.]

PhD Studentship at the University of Essex in collaboration with the Earlham Institute and Lion Seeds Ltd. is available for a project titled From Coast to Crop: Ecological Adaptation and Salinity Resilience in Wild Beet.

This CASE project focuses on sea beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima), the wild ancestor of sugar beet, and asks how plants adapt to coastal environments with strong gradients in salinity, soil moisture, and disturbance. The project aims to identify ecophysiological traits that underpin environmental adaptation and could be translated into future sugar beet breeding for improved salinity resilience.

The successful candidate will combine field ecology, plant ecophysiology, quantitative genetics, physiological phenotyping, and statistical analysis in R. Research activities include in situ phenotyping of wild plants, environmental characterisation of habitats (including soil salinity, moisture, carbon, and nitrogen), analysis of photosynthetic performance and water-use efficiency, and comparison of variation among maternal families. The student will also help develop and analyse a sea beet × sugar beet mapping population to identify genomic regions associated with salinity tolerance and assess breeding potential.

Training will be provided across the University of Essex, the Earlham Institute, and Lion Seeds Ltd., giving the student experience in academic research and commercial crop breeding. The project offers excellent preparation for careers in academia, industry, plant breeding, or environmental research, and is especially suitable for applicants interested in plant–environment interactions and applying ecological knowledge to crop improvement.

Funding: Fully funded ARIES studentship covering Home fees, a maintenance stipend of £21,805 per year for 2026-27, and a £2,500 research training and support grant. A limited number of studentships are available for international applicants, with the difference between Home and International fees waived by the registering university. Please note that relocation and living costs in the UK are not covered.

Eligibility: Applicants should hold at least a 2:1 Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Ecology, Plant Biology, Environmental Science, Agricultural Science, Biological Sciences, Genetics, Botany, or a related discipline. Relevant practical experience in fieldwork, plant physiology, or quantitative data analysis is desirable but not essential.

Deadline: 16 December 2026.
