About this position
PhD studentship at the University of Warwick in the Advanced Elastomer Research Group / International Institute for Nanocomposites Manufacturing (IINM), WMG, focused on the theme “From Nanointerfaces to Dynamic Performance: Next Generation Elastomer Technologies.” This is an industry-funded project sponsored by a global tyre industry partner, with a start date of 1 November 2026 and a duration of 3.5 years.
The research addresses major sustainability and mobility challenges, including tyre-wear particle emissions, emerging Euro 7 requirements, lower embodied carbon, extended service life, self-healing, adaptiveness, and reprocessability. The scientific focus is on nanoparticle surface chemistry, polymer–filler interfaces, and advanced characterisation, aiming to establish fundamental microstructure–property relationships in elastomer systems.
Carbon-based and hybrid nanomaterials will also be explored to enhance reinforcement and multifunctionality, with the goal of reducing energy loss while improving long-term dynamic performance. The project offers training in rheological and dynamic mechanical analysis, solid-state NMR, and time-resolved structural characterisation, integrating polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, and materials characterisation for sustainable mobility applications.
Applicants should have a strong background in chemistry, polymer science, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. The post is suitable for highly motivated candidates interested in elastomers, nanocomposites, nanomaterials, rheology, and advanced materials analysis. Eligible applicants are stated as UK or international, and the posting notes industry funding with a stipend.
Supervision is provided by Prof. Chaoying Wan and Prof. Steven Brown (Physics department). For enquiries about the project, contact Prof. Chaoying Wan at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted through the Warwick research degrees application route via the official application link.
