About this position
This is a 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD CASE studentship hosted at the University of East Anglia and based at the Earlham Institute, in collaboration with Tozer Seeds.
The project asks how celery can be future-proofed against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. apii race 4, a highly virulent pathogen threatening celery production worldwide. You will work with a large celery diversity panel, including advanced lines, landraces, naturalised material, and wild relatives, to identify independent sources of resistance that can be translated into durable breeding solutions.
Research activities will span population genomics, evolutionary analysis, structural variation, pangenomics, and genome-wide association approaches. You will study disease resistance under high field pressure and analyse SNP-, k-mer-, haplotype-, and pangenome-based signals linked to resistance. Time-course RNA-seq will be used to explore how celery responds during infection and whether different resistance sources activate shared or distinct defence pathways.
In the later stages of the project, you will develop your own direction through comparative genomics, NLRome analysis, breeding genetics, and AI-assisted candidate-gene prioritisation using genomic and protein language models. The project is strongly translation-focused, aiming to convert genomic diversity into practical disease-resistance strategies for sustainable vegetable production.
You will join a highly collaborative research environment with access to the Earlham Institute’s genomics and computational biology expertise, as well as training and career development across Norwich Research Park. The studentship includes payment of tuition fees, a stipend of £21,805 for 2026/27, and a Research Training Support Grant of £5,000 per year.
Applications close on 30 November 2026. Applicants should apply online via the University of East Anglia postgraduate research portal.

What's required
Applicants should be interested in plant genomics, crop breeding, plant pathology, and bioinformatics. The project involves population genomics, evolutionary analysis, structural variation, pangenomics, RNA-seq, and field-trial analysis, so computational and quantitative skills are desirable. Experience with statistics, reproducible analysis, and working with large genomic datasets would be advantageous. The post is a PhD studentship and is suitable for candidates meeting doctoral entry requirements; no specific degree class, GPA, or English language test score is stated in the advert.
