About this position
The University of Cambridge is offering a fully funded PhD studentship in alloy development for hydrogen-fuelled aircraft propulsion, based in the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy within the Structural Materials Group.
Hydrogen-powered gas turbines could enable cleaner civil aviation, but hydrogen embrittlement threatens key alloys used in fuel and combustion systems. This project will investigate the micromechanical mechanisms of hydrogen embrittlement in nickel-based superalloys and their relationships with crystal structure, grain size, alloy composition, and secondary phases.
The research will be conducted in close collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc. Experimental work will include hydrogen charging and detailed characterisation using scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, micromechanical testing with digital image correlation, and atomic force microscopy. The findings will support the design of new hydrogen-resistant superalloys for hydrogen-powered aircraft.
Applicants should hold or expect to obtain a good UK Master's degree or overseas equivalent in Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related science subject. Self-motivation, research independence, and effective communication skills are expected. Training will be provided in the computational and experimental methods, while relevant prior experience is advantageous.
The studentship lasts 3.5 years from 1 October 2027 and is funded by EPSRC and Rolls-Royce plc. It includes a maintenance stipend starting at £22,437 per year, plus a £5,500 annual Rolls-Royce top-up, with home fees covered. International applicants must meet the stated fee and funding conditions. Applications close on 1 December 2026, with interviews shortly afterwards.
