About this position

[UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year (2026/27 rate) plus full tuition fee waiver; three-year fully funded studentship.]

Bangor University’s Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre is offering a fully funded three-year PhD studentship in Data-Carrying Fibre-Based Sensing.

The project sits within the DSP Centre’s broader research activity in digital signal processing, optical communications, fibre networks, and next-generation telecommunications technologies. The Centre is described as internationally recognised and offers access to advanced research facilities, industry partnerships, and a collaborative research environment.

The studentship is funded through three major projects secured by the DSP Centre, including two supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) and one through the Flintshire & Wrexham Investment Zone Research and Innovation Programme.

Funding is particularly strong: the post includes a UKRI stipend of £21,805 per year at the 2026/27 rate, plus a full tuition fee waiver. The appointment is for three years initially, with possible extension subject to future funding.

Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a relevant physical science, engineering, or technology discipline. Desirable background areas include optical, wireless or optical wireless communications, joint communications and sensing, data networks, digital or analogue signal processing, mobile communications, high-speed digital circuit design, and computer programming. Strong mathematical, analytical, and experimental ability, plus excellent written and verbal communication skills, are expected. Research experience, publications, and knowledge of 5G/6G technologies are beneficial.

Research responsibilities include theoretical and/or experimental work, publishing in journals and conferences, presenting findings at meetings and workshops, maintaining laboratory equipment, contributing to research proposals, supporting undergraduate projects, and participating in training and development.

The position is based at Bangor University in North Wales. Candidates are expected to start as soon as possible. Non-UK/EU nationals may require an ATAS certificate. The closing date is 24 November 2026, and applications should be submitted online through the university portal.
