About this position

Cranfield University is offering a fully funded, three-year full-time PhD studentship in distributed machine learning over mobile networks, with a start date of 7 June 2027 and an application deadline of 3 February 2027.

The project will advance AI-on-RAN research by investigating how distributed and mobile inference of large language models can be optimised in real time. Research will explore the adaptive use of tokens, memory, and network bandwidth as demand shifts spatially and temporally and as inference becomes computationally intensive. The outcomes may influence the design of future AI algorithms and investment in computation and communication resources for 6G telecommunications networks.

The interdisciplinary project combines artificial intelligence, machine learning, foundation models, wireless networking, distributed computing, edge computing, radio access networks, and telecommunications. Students will receive university-based and wider Future Telecommunications Hubs ecosystem training alongside PhD researchers from other UK universities, with exposure to defence, government, and infrastructure stakeholders.

Applicants should have a first- or second-class UK honours degree or equivalent in computer science, statistics, electronic engineering, information engineering, or a related discipline. An AI background and curiosity about foundation models at the algorithmic level are particularly relevant. The studentship provides a tax-free bursary of up to £21,805 plus fees for three years and is intended for UK/Home-fee-status students.

Supervision is provided by Professor Weisi Guo and Dr Mengbang Zou. Eligible applicants should complete the online application form and upload all required documents. For further information, contact Professor Guo at [email protected].

What's required

Applicants should hold a first- or second-class UK honours degree or equivalent in a related discipline such as computer science, statistics, or electronic/information engineering. The project suits applicants with a fundamental curiosity about how foundation models work at the algorithmic level and an AI background with interest in wireless networking. Eligibility is restricted to UK students/Home fee status under applicable UK rules.

How to apply
