About this position
The University of Nottingham invites applications for a PhD studentship on insulation reliability for next-generation electric motors serving automotive and aerospace applications. The project is based in the Power Electronics, Machines and Control Research Group at the Power Electronics and Machines Centre, Jubilee Campus.
The research will examine winding insulation systems, including emerging hairpin and Litz-wire technologies, under representative electrical, thermal, pressure and mechanical stresses. Particular attention will be given to partial-discharge inception, insulation degradation and endurance, especially under reduced air pressure relevant to aerospace systems. The successful researcher will combine experimental testing with insulation lifetime modelling to develop methods for predicting reliability under realistic operating conditions.
Applicants must hold a relevant master's degree in electrical or electronic engineering, general engineering, mechatronics, physics, materials science or engineering, mechanical or aerospace engineering, or a closely related field. Experience with high-voltage engineering, electrical machines, power electronics or dielectric materials is advantageous. Knowledge of COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB, together with programming, experimental hardware, analytical, mathematical, communication and scientific writing skills, is desirable. The position is restricted to UK candidates due to funding requirements.
To apply, email a motivation-focused cover letter, CV and academic transcripts to Hadi Naderiallaf at [email protected]. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview, after which the successful candidate must submit a formal online university application. Applications close on 1 December 2026.
