About this position

The University of Nottingham is offering a four-year PhD CASE studentship investigating the interface material layer created during linear friction welding (LFW) of titanium alloys.

The project will develop a fundamental understanding of thermo-mechanical effects and material flow within the high-strain-rate, high-temperature interface contact layer formed during LFW. It will examine links between process variables, process stability, machine and tooling behavior, flash extrusion, and the quality of welded joints, including dissimilar titanium-alloy joints.

Research methods will combine computational simulation with experimental test welds and novel material-characterisation techniques. The work is hosted by Nottingham’s UTC in gas turbine transmission systems and is connected to the University’s long-standing engineering research relationship with Rolls-Royce plc. The research has applications in solid-state joining of blades to discs for lightweight, high-performance aero-engine fan and compressor stages.

The studentship is available from 1 October 2026 and remains open until filled. Funding includes a stipend of £25,000 per year for four years. Applicants must have a first-class or upper second-class honours degree in mechanical engineering or a related subject and must be a UK or EU candidate due to funding restrictions.

To apply, visit the University of Nottingham vacancy page and search for reference ENG413. Informal inquiries can be directed to Dr James Rouse at [email protected].
