About this position
The University of Birmingham is offering a PhD studentship examining the physics of learning in robotic metamaterials, at the intersection of robotics, soft matter physics, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics and materials science.
The project investigates active mechanical metamaterials and distributed robotic systems: networks of sensors and actuators that communicate locally to produce collective functionality. Inspired by living systems such as starfish and bacteria, these mechanically soft networks distribute actuation, feedback and computation across their bodies rather than relying on a rigid, centrally controlled architecture.
The PhD researcher will lead work on robotic metamaterials that can adapt their dynamics to an environment after deployment. The research will develop and apply decentralized learning techniques to networks of active mechanical units, with the aim of shaping their dynamics and functionality. It will also explore fundamental links between network structure and function.
The project combines theoretical and experimental approaches. The researcher will capture the nonlinear dynamics of active networks through theory and numerical simulations, and design tabletop robotic experiments implementing learning algorithms in unpredictable environments. The work offers scope to tailor the project to the student’s interests and expertise while contributing to the development of bio-inspired robots that can operate without central control, adapt to changing environments and tolerate substantial damage.
The research environment is led by Dr. Jack Binysh and supported by the Binysh Lab at the University of Birmingham’s School of Engineering, where students can engage with metamaterials, soft matter, nonlinear dynamics, computational modelling and robotics.
