About this position
PhD Studentship at the University of East Anglia in partnership with The Sainsbury Laboratory and the John Innes Centre.
This project asks a fascinating question in plant biology: where do plants make their medicine? When a pathogen attacks, infected leaves do not mount a uniform defence. Instead, different cells appear to activate different chemical defence pathways. Building on recent single-cell findings, this PhD will map the hidden cellular geography of plant defence and explore whether it can reveal new biosynthetic pathways.
The research will focus on Arabidopsis thaliana and combine fluorescence reporter lines, advanced microscopy, single-cell gene activity analysis, chromatin profiling, genome editing, pathogen assays, and metabolomics. You will examine around 100,000 infected leaf nuclei, integrate these data with a curated catalogue of biosynthetic enzymes, and test candidate gene modules to determine what chemical products they make and whether they contribute to resistance against bacteria and fungi.
Training will cover plant molecular biology, single-cell data analysis, plant pathology, genome editing, advanced imaging, and natural-product chemistry. The project is described as a supported start with established data and methods, followed by increasing intellectual ownership as you develop the most promising candidates. It is therefore well suited to a student who is curious about plant defence and enthusiastic about connecting experimental biology with computation and chemistry.
The studentship is part of the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP), which offers a fully funded 4-year PhD for October 2027 entry and includes a three-month professional internship placement (PIPS). Funding covers tuition fees, a living stipend, and a Research Training Support Grant. The advertised stipend rate is £21,805 for 2026/27, plus £5,000 per year RTSG.
Entry requirements include a UK equivalent bachelor’s degree at 2:1 or above, and English language proficiency at IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category. The application deadline is 30 November 2026, and shortlisted applicants will be interviewed in early February 2027.
