About this position
Postdoctoral position in Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma Jets and Natural Extracts for Antimicrobial Applications at the GREMI Laboratory, Université d'Orléans/CNRS, France.
The project, PLASNANOBIAL – Plasma and Nanomaterials for Antimicrobial Properties, is funded by the ANR (French National Research Agency) and runs for 18 months (renewable), with a flexible start date ideally in Q1 2027. The work is based in Orléans and focuses on developing innovative plasma-based antimicrobial solutions to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
The successful candidate will work within Work Package 1 on the use of Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP) jets to functionalize surfaces with natural extract vapors such as eugenol, carvacrol, and thymol. The goal is to generate uniform biocidal coatings on flexible biomedical substrates including sutures and dressings, in order to eradicate microorganisms and inhibit microbial adhesion.
Research activities include optimizing CAP jet parameters (He/N₂/O₂ mixtures, pulse voltage, frequency, gas flow, exposure time), developing protocols to assess antibacterial activity, studying plasma-liquid interactions, and identifying reactive species such as ROS/RNS (OH, H₂O₂, NO₂, etc.) that contribute to antimicrobial performance. The role also involves characterizing treated materials using OES, UV-Vis, FTIR, XPS, and SEM, and designing/testing a roll-to-roll plasma system for continuous treatment of flexible substrates. Collaboration with project partners will include supplying plasma-treated samples and contributing to microbiological assays.
Eligibility highlights: a PhD in Physics, Microbiology, Plasma, or a related field defended within the last 3 years; strong experimental experience in CAP jets, DBD systems, or plasma-activated water; experience with bacterial decontamination evaluation and material characterization; fluency in English; French is a plus; and a publication record in plasma applications.
To apply, candidates should send a one-page CV and a one-page motivation letter in English by 30 November 2026 to [email protected], using the subject line Post-doc Application – Your Name.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in Physics, Microbiology, Plasma, or a related field, defended within the last 3 years. A strong experimental background in Cold Atmospheric Pressure Plasma (CAP) jets, DBD systems, or plasma-activated water (design, operation, diagnostics) is required, along with know-how in bacterial decontamination evaluation. Experience with plasma-liquid interactions, reactive species (ROS/RNS), and material characterization techniques such as OES, UV-Vis, FTIR, XPS, and SEM is expected. Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required; French is an advantage. A publication record in plasma applications is preferred.
How to apply
Send a CV (maximum 1 page) and a motivation letter (maximum 1 page) written in English. Email the documents to [email protected] with the subject line: Post-doc Application – Your Name. Apply by 2026-11-30.
