About this position
Ghent University is recruiting a post-doctoral assistant for the Department of Public Governance and Management (EB25) within the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration in Belgium. This is a 100% temporary appointment with one opening, starting at the earliest on 1 January 2027. The appointment is centered on academic research and teaching in the field of public administration and public management.
The role is strongly research-oriented: at least 70% of the assignment is devoted to academic research, including the further development of your research portfolio and potentially new research-related assignments. In the short term, the post-holder will prepare an application for a postdoctoral fellowship with external funders such as the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Teaching responsibilities include contributing to bachelor’s and/or master’s level courses in the Public Administration and Public Management programme, acting as responsible or co-lecturer, and supervising bachelor’s and master’s students through internships and master’s dissertations. The position also includes a coordinating role in organizing support activities for PhD students.
The university is looking for a candidate with a doctoral degree in Public Administration and Management or another relevant social science discipline, to be obtained by the date of appointment. Applicants should have prior research experience in public administration and management, a strong doctoral profile showing promise for an academic career, and relevant scientific publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals or respected edited volumes. Quality is emphasized over quantity, and the department values active participation in international academic networks in Public Administration. Because the appointment is expected to start soon, rapid availability is considered an advantage. A good command of Dutch is necessary for the teaching component.
The successful candidate will receive a three-year temporary appointment, with the possibility of a further up to three-year extension subject to a favourable evaluation. Salary is according to AAP5. Ghent University also highlights its broad staff benefits, including training and education opportunities, paid leave, bicycle commuting reimbursement, and ecocheques.
Applications must be submitted online before 11 August 2026 at 23:59 Brussels time. The application file should include a merged PDF with your CV and publication overview, a cover letter, and a transcript of the required degree if already available. If your foreign diploma is not in Dutch, French, German, or English, a translation is required. For diplomas awarded outside the EU, a certificate of equivalence from NARIC is required or proof of application for it at the start of the appointment. For support, contact Prof. Bram Verschuere at [email protected].
