About this position
New Jersey Institute of Technology is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to join a multidisciplinary effort on electric vehicle and hybrid electric vehicle battery recycling, reuse, and remanufacturing. The project centers on understanding the science and technology behind end-of-life battery management in New Jersey and the Northeast, with an emphasis on building a regional picture of how batteries can move through reuse, recycling, and remanufacturing pathways.
The successful researcher will contribute to a regional needs assessment that examines industry readiness for extended producer responsibility frameworks, maps end-of-life infrastructure, and identifies strategies for strengthening sustainable battery management. The work spans technical analysis and policy-facing research, including assessing the viability, safety, and efficiency of hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, direct recycling, and remanufacturing approaches. The position also looks at how evolving lithium-ion battery chemistries affect infrastructure needs and processing requirements.
Working with a multidisciplinary team in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science, the postdoc will gather and analyze data from battery manufacturers, recyclers, regulatory bodies, regional stakeholders, and public agencies. The project includes evaluating current producer practices, identifying relevant business entities and processing facilities inside and outside New Jersey, and helping develop a regional infrastructure framework with attention to bottlenecks, capacity gaps, and broader social, economic, and regulatory impacts.
The role is research-intensive and geared toward producing technical reports, policy briefs, and peer-reviewed publications. It sits within NJIT’s broader research environment in Newark, where the university emphasizes collaborative, applied research and technological excellence.
