About this position
IMT Atlantique is offering a full-time post-doctoral researcher position in the Data Science department for the French–German ANR-DFG 3DFaceBias project. The project focuses on measuring, explaining, and reducing accuracy disparities in 3D facial reconstruction from 2D photographs. The successful candidate will work closely with the German principal investigator Bernhard Egger and his team at FAU, and will contribute to the IMT Atlantique research direction under the scientific supervision of Sarah Matta and Tinashe Mutsvangwa.
The research agenda centers on bias evaluation and mitigation in 3D face reconstruction. The postdoc will audit bias in 3D face reconstruction from 2D images, identify sources of bias through data-centric analysis, and design and evaluate mitigation strategies. The role also includes broader project contributions, making it well suited to a researcher interested in machine learning, computer vision, statistics, fairness, and reproducible experimental research.
The position is hosted by IMT Atlantique, part of IMT (Institut Mines-Télécom), in Brest, France. IMT Atlantique highlights its scientific and technical excellence, and the project offers the opportunity to develop research in a highly collaborative French–German environment. The postdoc will engage with topics at the intersection of machine learning, statistical analysis, 3D geometry, and medical image computing, with an emphasis on transparent evaluation and responsible handling of facial data.
Eligibility requirements include a PhD obtained less than three years prior to the hiring date, strong experience in empirical machine-learning research and advanced statistical methods, proficiency in Python and frameworks such as PyTorch, and knowledge of computer vision, 3D reconstruction, algorithmic fairness, robustness, and dataset preparation. Good scientific English and strong academic writing skills are required. Previous experience in 3D facial reconstruction is considered an asset, but applicants with strong empirical ML and statistical backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
The contract is temporary and full-time, with an expected start date of 1 March 2027. The application deadline is 20 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Paris), and interviews are conducted on a rolling basis. Benefits mentioned include on-site cafeteria access, sports and leisure offers, public transport subsidies, sustainable mobility support, family allowance, social benefits, partial teleworking, and generous leave.
Interested candidates should apply via the provided Recruitee application website and consult the detailed job description before submitting an application. Contact information listed in the posting includes Sarah Matta for job content and Mélissandre Morvan for administrative and HR aspects.
