About this position
Post-doctoral researcher in DAS seismology at the University of Strasbourg / ITES – Institut Terre et Environnement de Strasbourg (UMR 7063), France.
This 18-month postdoctoral opportunity is part of DASEC (Deep listening: fiber-optic seismology in the Antarctic ice sheet), a two-year project funded by the Université de Strasbourg through a USIAS Fellowship. The project focuses on deploying and analysing DAS fibre-optic seismology in Antarctica, with fieldwork planned for the 2027–2028 austral summer at Concordia Station, Dome C, East Antarctica, including the EPICA ice-core borehole and a surface seismic array.
The research aims to answer key questions about the Antarctic ice sheet, including the crystal fabric of deep ice, the properties of the ice–bedrock interface, the existence of passive seismic sources in a slowly deforming dome, and spatial variation in firn properties under very low snow accumulation. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for taking the experiment from deployment planning through to the first data analysis and publications.
Core duties include planning DAS and node deployment with the project team, developing and testing the analysis suite on synthetic data, leading the field campaign at Concordia Station for about six to eight weeks, and conducting the first scientific analysis and publication outputs. The role also includes writing reproducible analysis code, operating and troubleshooting the acquisition system in the field, working with the seismic observatory and IPEV staff, co-supervising interns and PhD students, and contributing to USIAS seminar and symposium activities.
Applicants should hold a PhD in seismology, geophysics, glaciology, or a related field, awarded less than three years ago. Required experience includes DAS or dense seismic array fieldwork, Python programming for large continuous datasets, and reproducible research practices (git, testing, documentation). A publication record in peer-reviewed journals is expected. Desirable skills include ambient-noise and array methods, fibre–ground coupling and DAS response knowledge, HPC/cluster experience, polar or high-altitude fieldwork, field logistics planning, and experience mentoring interns or PhD students. Fluent written and spoken English is required; French is optional.
The appointment is based in Strasbourg, France, with an application deadline of 27 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Paris). This is a full-time temporary postdoctoral contract starting on 27 October 2026.

What's required
A PhD in seismology, geophysics, glaciology or a related field obtained less than 3 years ago is required. Applicants should have field experience with DAS or dense seismic arrays, including deployment, operation and troubleshooting; strong scientific programming skills in Python for large continuous datasets; reproducible-code practice using git, testing and documentation; and a publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Desirable experience includes array and ambient-noise methods such as beamforming, frequency-wavenumber analysis, noise interferometry, event detection and location, understanding of fibre-ground coupling and DAS instrument response, and high-performance computing or cluster use. Desirable operational experience includes polar fieldwork, high-altitude fieldwork above 3,000 m, planning field campaigns with logistics, permits and budget, co-supervising interns or PhD students, and holding a driving licence. Fluent written and spoken English is required; French is not required but may help.
