About this position
The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), Austria’s leading non-university research and science institution, is recruiting a full-time Postdoc (f/m/x) at the Institute of Culture Studies (IKW) in Vienna. The position is part of the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) project Carnap in Context IV (PAT7905424), led by PD Dr. Christian Damböck, and begins on February 1, 2027 for a period of 14 months.
The successful applicant will work on the study of Rudolf Carnap’s epistemological writings from the 1930s and contribute to the preparation of the preface and scientific introduction to volume 6 of The Collected Works of Rudolf Carnap (OUP), titled Logic and Epistemology 1934–1942. The postdoc will serve as co-editor of the volume together with Richard Creath and Richard Zach, and will contribute to the project’s theoretical development, joint research outputs, conferences, workshops, and edited publications.
The project is embedded in the IKW “Knowledge Production” research group, offering a small collaborative environment with close interaction with the PI and the volume editors. The role is especially suited to scholars with a strong background in philosophy, the history of analytic philosophy, Carnap studies, epistemology, semantics, and philosophy of logic. Experience with academic editing and publication work is valuable, and the project also supports international collaboration and dissemination at conferences and workshops.
Eligibility requires a completed PhD in philosophy or equivalent, exceptional knowledge of Carnap’s work in the 1930s and early 1940s, including the protocol sentence debate and his contributions to the Encyclopedia of Unified Science, excellent English (native-speaker level), and proficiency with LaTeX. German is beneficial but not mandatory. Applicants should also demonstrate strong organisational and teamwork skills.
The appointment is full-time (40 hours/week), offers a minimum annual gross salary of EUR 70,167.44 according to the Austrian Academy of Sciences collective agreement, and includes funding for conference attendance and workshop organisation. The workplace is in downtown Vienna, with flexible working arrangements including up to 40% home office.
To apply, submit a single PDF via the online portal by October 31, 2026. The application should include a motivation letter (max. 2 pages), academic CV (max. 3 pages) covering publications, presentations, teaching, organisational experience, and career breaks, scanned copies of academic diplomas, and a writing sample of 15–20 pages. Applications may be submitted in German or English.
