About this position
This postdoctoral position at Chalmers University of Technology offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative research in the development of novel two-dimensional (2D) materials and their composites for lithium-ion and future battery technologies. The role is based in the Division of Materials and Manufacture within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, a dynamic and international team dedicated to advancing materials science and sustainable manufacturing solutions. The research project aims to investigate how 2D materials such as graphene, MXenes, and transition metal dichalcogenides can enhance battery performance, including charge transport, energy storage capacity, safety, and lifespan. These materials are known for their high electrical conductivity, large surface area, and mechanical strength, which address key limitations of conventional lithium-ion batteries such as slow charging rates, low energy density, overheating, and poor cycle stability.
As a postdoc, you will be involved in the synthesis of 2D materials and related composites, surface functionalization and modification, understanding energy storage mechanisms, and fabricating batteries for performance evaluation. The position also includes supervising master’s and/or PhD students and the possibility to engage in teaching at undergraduate or master’s level. The research environment is highly collaborative, with strong ties to industry and a focus on real-world impact.
Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Materials Science, Polymer Chemistry, Physics, or an equivalent foreign degree, with strong English communication skills and experience in 2D materials synthesis and battery applications. Teaching experience and a recent doctoral degree (within the last three years) are highly valued, as is a good publication record in relevant fields. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Gothenburg is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date.
Chalmers University of Technology provides a dynamic working environment with comprehensive employee benefits, including generous parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. The university is committed to gender balance, equality, and inclusion, offering Swedish language courses for international staff. The application process requires submission of a CV, publication list, teaching experience, and a personal letter outlining research background and future goals. Applications must be submitted online by 30th June 2026; incomplete or emailed applications will not be considered. For further information, contact Associate Professor Jinhua Sun at [email protected].
Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its research and education in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and collaboration for a sustainable future. The university’s motto, 'Avancez – forward,' reflects its commitment to scientific excellence and societal impact.
