About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for the Division of Electric Power Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering, in Gothenburg, Sweden. The project focuses on accurate magnetic loss measurements for electrical machines, with the broader aim of reducing the need for heavy rare-earth materials and improving the efficiency of electrified transport systems.

The research addresses a key challenge in electric drive technology: current models and laboratory tests do not accurately reproduce the losses and magnetic behaviour of electrical steel under real inverter-fed operating conditions. In particular, pulse-width modulation (PWM) from power electronic converters introduces high-frequency harmonics that significantly increase magnetic core losses. The postdoc will help develop a reconfigurable test rig using a recently acquired Imperix power electronic system and Imperix B-Box controller to emulate power-electronics supply conditions in existing magnetic characterisation facilities.

The successful candidate will join a strong research environment in the Division of Electric Power Engineering, where work spans power systems, power electronics, electric machines, and high-voltage engineering. The division combines theoretical foundations with extensive experimental verification in laboratories and field settings, with a mission to support sustainable energy, vehicles, buildings, and industrial applications.

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or a closely related field by the time the employment decision is made. Experience in soft magnetic material testing, magnetic loss determination, magnetic field versus magnetic flux measurements, and theoretical modelling is strongly expected. Independence, collaboration skills, and the ability to teach and supervise students are also valued. English proficiency is required, and Swedish language ability is an advantage; Chalmers offers Swedish courses for newcomers.

The appointment is a temporary full-time position for two years, with a possible one-year extension. Physical presence throughout the appointment is required, and a valid residence permit must be available by the start date. The role offers opportunities to publish in high-ranked journals and conferences, supervise master’s and/or PhD students, and participate in undergraduate or master’s teaching.

Application materials must be submitted in English as PDF files via the online system. Required documents include a comprehensive CV with publication list and teaching/pedagogical experience, plus a personal letter describing research background, outcomes, future goals, and research focus. The deadline for applications is 2026-11-06. Contact for questions: Professor Torbjörn Thiringer ([email protected]).

What's required

A doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, or an equivalent subject background is required and must be completed by the employment decision date. It is highly meritorious if the doctorate was obtained within the last three years before the application deadline. Applicants should have strong written and verbal English skills, experience in testing soft magnetic materials for loss determination and magnetic field versus magnetic flux properties, and theory modelling skills in the subject. Ability to drive a project independently is vital, and cooperation with other researchers is required. Experience developing test equipment for testing soft magnetic materials is a benefit. Some ability to communicate in Swedish is an advantage, and interest in learning Swedish is a prerequisite. Some familiarity with teaching and good potential within research and education are expected.

How to apply

Prepare the application in English and submit it through the online application form on the Chalmers vacancies page. Upload the required PDF files, including a comprehensive CV with publications and teaching experience, and a personal letter summarizing your research background and future goals. Do not send applications by email; incomplete applications will not be considered.
