About this position

Chalmers University of Technology is advertising a Postdoc in Bioinformatics and Machine Learning based in Gothenburg, Sweden, within the Computational Genomics Research (CGR) Lab and the Data Science and AI division in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering. The position sits at the intersection of genomics, computational biology, machine learning, and data science, with a focus on understanding genome evolution and variation.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative research environment with strong links across computing and life sciences. The CGR lab develops interpretable and efficient methods for comparative pangenomics, using machine learning, statistical analysis, and efficient algorithms/data structures to study human genome variation and evolution. The lab’s research page is available at https://CGRlab.github.io/research/.

The postdoc project is flexible and can be shaped around the candidate’s strengths. Three example directions are highlighted: (1) comparative analysis of noncoding genomic regions and efficient indexing methods for large-scale DNA sequence data, including string algorithms, sequence indexing, pattern matching, and high-performance computing; (2) machine learning models for haplotype phasing and characterization of genetic variation; and (3) methods for studying the evolution of de novo genes in eukaryotes. Applicants with related expertise in computational biology, bioinformatics, algorithms, or machine learning are encouraged to apply.

Mandatory requirements include a doctoral degree or equivalent foreign degree, strong English communication skills, proficiency in a programming language such as C++, Python, or Rust, and at least one high-quality first-author paper in a journal or top-tier conference. Experience with teaching is expected to some extent, and a recent PhD completion (within the last three years) is highly meritorious. The role includes research publication, supervision of master’s and/or PhD students to some extent, and possible teaching at undergraduate or master’s level.

This is a temporary full-time employment for two years. The position requires physical presence during the whole employment period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date if applicable. Chalmers offers employee benefits, a dynamic working environment in Gothenburg, and an inclusive research culture with initiatives supporting gender balance and equality.

Applications must be submitted in English via the online application system by 2026-09-30. Applicants should attach a CV and a motivation letter as PDF files, and incomplete applications or email submissions will not be considered. Contact person: Sina Majidian (Assistant Professor), [email protected].
