About this position
Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in heat management for aircraft and propulsion, located in Gothenburg, Sweden. This research opportunity is situated within the Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences, specifically the Division of Fluid Dynamics, which is renowned for its advanced experimental and computational research in transport and energy systems. The project aims to develop efficient, lightweight, and robust thermal solutions for next-generation aero-engines and aircraft architectures, with a strong emphasis on hydrogen-fueled propulsion and climate-neutral aviation.
The research focuses on integrating compact heat exchangers, innovative cooling concepts, and system-level thermal management methodologies. By leveraging physics-based modelling and aerodynamic optimization, the project seeks to reduce specific fuel consumption and NOx emissions, improve cycle efficiency, and address practical constraints such as pressure-loss and installation feasibility. The work builds on recent advances at Chalmers, including the development of heat-management methodologies for thermal network modelling, component heat-load assessment, and system integration. The project delivers an integrated framework combining cycle analysis, heat-exchanger design, aerodynamic integration, and system-level thermal management to support credible pathways toward low-emission hydrogen aviation.
The successful candidate will conduct research on new concepts for energy-efficient aero engines, supervise master’s and/or PhD students, and may engage in teaching at undergraduate or master’s level. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the employment period, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment, comprehensive employee benefits, and support for settling in Sweden, including Swedish language courses.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, Applied Physics, or a closely related field. A strong research track record, demonstrated by publications and conference participation, is essential. Experience in thermal management, heat-exchanger integration, multidisciplinary modelling, and numerical simulation tools (Python, Matlab, Modelica, CFD/1D modelling, optimization) is highly valued. The ideal candidate is collaborative, communicates clearly, and contributes to an inclusive workplace. Chalmers is committed to gender equality and diversity, offering a supportive environment for researchers from all backgrounds.
To apply, submit your application in English as PDF files, including a comprehensive CV, publication list, details of your studies and courses (with grades), and previous teaching experience. Applications must be submitted via the online application form; incomplete applications or those sent by email will not be considered. The deadline for applications is February 28, 2026. For further information, contact Professor Tomas Grönstedt at [email protected].
This position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in sustainable aviation, collaborate with leading academics and industry partners, and advance your career in a vibrant international research environment.
