About this position

Postdoc in Intravital Microscopy at ETH Zurich

ETH Zurich is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Department of Biology in Zurich, Switzerland. The postdoc will use state-of-the-art intravital microscopy to study macrophage biology and tissue repair in vivo, with a particular focus on tissue-resident immune cells, the mesothelium, serosal cavities, and the liver.

The project combines live imaging, mouse models, quantitative analysis, and computational methods to understand how macrophages contribute to tissue homeostasis and organ-level repair. A major translational motivation is abdominal surgery, especially adhesion formation, and the project is carried out in close collaboration with clinicians to connect basic mechanisms with surgical practice.

The successful candidate will design and perform intravital microscopy experiments in mice, extend imaging approaches to additional organs, and investigate macrophage dynamics and serosal repair mechanisms. The role also includes analysis of imaging data, spectral flow cytometry, and bioinformatics analysis of single-cell and spatial transcriptomics data, with integration of these datasets to correlate imaging and molecular findings.

Additional responsibilities include presenting findings at meetings and conferences, contributing to manuscripts and grant writing, and co-supervising MSc and PhD students. The lab is newly established and offers cutting-edge fluorescent reporter models, access to advanced intravital imaging infrastructure, and a research environment with high-end computational resources and strong support for AI-assisted research workflows.

Eligibility and profile: Applicants should hold a PhD in Immunology, Cell Biology, or a related field. Experience with rodent models is required. Experience with intravital or in vivo imaging, strong quantitative and image-analysis skills, and solid R and/or Python ability are highly desirable. The ideal candidate will have first-author publications, excellent English communication skills, and a collaborative, team-oriented approach. Interest in tissue repair or regenerative biology is a plus.

Funding and contract: The position is funded for up to 4 years, beginning with an initial 1-year contract and annual renewal thereafter.
