About this position

Postdoctoral opening at Aalborg University in the Department of the Built Environment (BUILD) for research on microbial cement-based functional materials and energy storage. The position is hosted by the C-BEAM Lab (Cement Bio-Energy Advanced Materials Lab), led by Qi Luo, and focuses on next-generation cementitious materials that combine cement chemistry, materials science, microbiology, and electrochemical systems.

The project aims to transform conventional cementitious materials into microbial-enabled functional infrastructure materials with integrated energy storage capabilities. Research tasks include cement formulation and processing, specimen preparation, microstructural and chemical characterization, electrochemical performance evaluation, and potentially bio-enabled cement systems such as microbial–cement interactions or self-healing concepts. The role is highly experimental and collaborative, with opportunities to work with internal and international research partners.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must have a PhD; a strong background in cement chemistry, cement and concrete materials, materials science, or civil/structural engineering is preferred. Hands-on laboratory experience is important. Experience with microbial systems, biomaterials, or bio-electrochemical systems is an advantage but not required. Good English skills and evidence of publication potential are expected.

Funding and terms: this is a full-time 2-year postdoctoral position supported by the Villum Foundation (Villum Experiment). Salary and employment conditions follow Danish university collective agreements. The position is expected to start on 2026-09-01 or soon thereafter.

Deadline: 2026-04-24. Applications must be submitted through Aalborg University’s recruitment system. Required documents include an application letter, CV, master’s and PhD diplomas, publication list, and any relevant teaching/dissemination documentation plus references/recommendations.
