About this position
EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) is advertising a postdoctoral position in the Artificial Intelligence in Molecular Medicine (AIMM) Lab led by Prof. Charlotte Bunne. The position is part of an industry collaboration with Novartis and is based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The project focuses on multimodal foundation models for biological and translational research. Research directions include multimodal model development, novel pretraining objectives, tokenization, scalable architectures, multimodal representation learning, and agentic interfaces that integrate foundation models into reasoning and decision-support systems. The work also aims to support early drug discovery using public and Novartis-internal datasets.
Applicants should have a PhD in machine learning, computer science, computational biology, or a closely related field (completed or near completion). The post seeks candidates with strong experience in large-scale AI development, including pretraining, fine-tuning, or scaling on substantial compute, plus a solid biological background and familiarity with multiple biological data modalities. A strong publication record at top-tier ML conferences and/or life science journals is expected, along with excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research.
The appointment is 100% activity rate, with a one-year contract and a planned one-year renewal. The role includes dedicated access to the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS) and the Swiss AI Initiative, as well as close collaboration with Novartis Biomedical Research. No stipend amount is stated.
To apply, submit a CV, a 1-page statement of research interests, and the names of two references. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. More information is available via aimm.epfl.ch.
