About this position
Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is offering a 2.5-year postdoctoral position in peatland hydrology with a focus on groundwater dynamics and machine learning. The project is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and starts on 1 February 2027.
The postdoc is part of the Horizon Europe PEAT-GENIE project, an international collaboration involving 20 partners from 10 European countries. PEAT-GENIE aims to develop a user-friendly Digital Twin platform for monitoring, restoring, and managing peatlands across Europe. The position sits in a highly interdisciplinary environment connecting peatland ecology, hydrology, remote sensing, biogeochemistry, computer science, and stakeholder engagement.
The research will focus on developing data-driven approaches to understand and predict groundwater dynamics in peatlands, especially their response to climate change and land restoration. Key tasks include building machine learning models to predict groundwater dynamics across space and time, and developing an assessment tool that links numerical hydrological models with machine learning to evaluate the impacts of climate change and restoration.
The project combines hydrological modelling, remote sensing, machine learning, and environmental data analysis. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with researchers across disciplines and with project partners across Europe, and will be expected to publish findings in leading peer-reviewed journals while contributing to project meetings, workshops, and international conferences.
Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in geosciences, environmental engineering, hydrology, environmental science, or a related field. Strong experience in groundwater hydrology, process understanding in peatland or catchment systems, numerical modelling, machine learning, GIS, satellite remote sensing, Python, and large environmental datasets will be advantageous. Excellent English skills are required; Danish language learning is encouraged during the appointment.
Application deadline: 5 November 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Copenhagen). Applications should be submitted through the GEUS careers website.

The postdoc should have a strong scientific record and relevant professional experience, with particular emphasis on process understanding at the intersection of catchment hydrology, groundwater, and peatland ecosystems, numerical hydrological modelling, groundwater hydrology, and machine learning/data-driven modelling. Experience with GIS, satellite remote sensing, Python programming, and handling large environmental datasets is considered an asset. Prior publication and conference experience is positively evaluated. Candidates must have an excellent command of English, written and spoken, and if they do not speak Danish they are encouraged to take Danish language classes during employment. Strong personal skills in structured, independent, responsible, proactive, inquisitive work and collaborative teamwork are expected.
