About this position

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in physics and materials science focused on PLD-synthesized twisted oxide and hybrid quantum materials. The position is based in the Neutron & X-Ray Scattering, & Thermophysics group within the Materials Analysis and Interface Science Section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at ORNL in the United States.

The research covers epitaxial synthesis of complex-oxide thin films and heterostructures by pulsed laser deposition, twisted heterostructure and device fabrication using free-standing oxide membranes, and analysis of structural, ferroelectric, electric transport, magnetic, and superconducting properties. The role also includes collaboration on scanning tunneling microscopy and quantum device development, plus publishing papers and presenting at conferences.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in condensed matter physics, materials science and engineering, or a closely related field completed within the last 5 years. Experience in correlated oxides or 2D materials and thin film deposition or 2D materials synthesis is required. Preferred experience includes twisted materials fabrication and characterization, correlated-electron physics, spin-polarized STM, and quantum device development.

The appointment is up to 24 months with possible extension, depending on performance and funding. ORNL provides competitive pay and benefits. Applicants must submit three letters of reference and apply through the ORNL careers portal.
