About this position

Postdoctoral opportunity at Met Éireann in Ireland focused on regional ocean modelling, climate extremes, Earth System Models, and hybrid methods within the RazorEge consortium.

The project aims to improve regional climate predictions for Ireland and Europe by addressing persistent biases in ocean currents, deep-water overflows, and atmospheric teleconnections. The successful candidate will work on innovative, computationally efficient modelling techniques within the EC-Earth system and help evaluate drivers of European climate extremes such as severe storms, precipitation, and marine heatwaves. The role contributes to robust CMIP7 simulations with relevance for policy, adaptation, and mitigation.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in ocean science, climate science, physical oceanography, or a closely related field; experience in ocean or Earth System Model development/evaluation; analysis of large climate model datasets; strong programming skills (Python, Fortran, bash); and familiarity with HPC environments. Experience in research project contribution and communication skills are required. Desirable experience includes NEMO, AGRIF, coupled atmosphere-ocean modelling, CMIP protocols, ESM evaluation frameworks, and regional climate dynamics.

Funding and conditions: 24-month position, initial salary €55,949/year increasing to €59,567 after one year, 25 days annual leave, and possible remote work under approved policies.

Deadline: 30 October 2026.
