About this position
The University of Luxembourg, a modern and international research university, is offering a postdoctoral position in Verification, Validation & Perception for Robotics within the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT). The successful candidate will join the Space Robotics (SpaceR) research group, collaborating closely with Prof. Olivares-Mendez and Dr. Carol Martinez, as well as Redwire Space Luxembourg. The group is renowned for its cutting-edge research in space robotics, including in-space servicing, assembly, manufacturing, space debris removal, XR immersive teleoperation, robot multi-modal perception, and multi-robot cooperation. SpaceR provides access to state-of-the-art facilities such as the LunaLab, Zero-G Lab, and Robotic Manipulation Lab, enabling hands-on experimentation and development.
The postdoc will lead the development of a verification and validation (V&V) framework for AI-augmented perception systems, focusing on robotic proximity operations in space. Responsibilities include investigating V&V techniques for space systems, developing novel methods for characterizing and quantifying input-output bounds in AI perception systems, and contributing to certification processes for industrial partners. The role also involves leading hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) and software-in-the-loop (SITL) test campaigns, collaborating with a vibrant team of over 23 members, and supporting PhD candidates in their research.
Applicants should hold a PhD in Robotics, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field, with a strong background in robotic perception and learning-based methods. Required expertise includes machine learning/deep learning (especially computer vision or 3D perception), V&V of advanced algorithms, formal methods, safety engineering, control/estimation theory, and programming skills in Python and C++. Experience with PyTorch, ROS, and robotic experiments is essential, along with a proven publication record in top-tier conferences and journals. Fluency in English, teamwork, and a commitment to pushing the frontier of space-borne perception systems are expected.
The position offers a fixed-term contract for 24 months, with a yearly gross salary of EUR 85,176. The University of Luxembourg fosters a diverse and inclusive environment, with staff from over 90 countries and strong ties to industry and European institutions. Applications should be submitted online through the university's HR system, including a CV and cover letter. Early applications are encouraged, and preference will be given to female candidates in departments where gender parity is not yet achieved. For more information, visit the SpaceR group and university research pages.
