About this position

Postdoc opportunity at Aarhus University, Denmark in hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of biomass and wastes.

The Department of Biological and Chemical Engineering invites applications for two fixed-term postdoctoral positions in a new research project on HTL. One appointment is for 2 years and the other for 1.5 years, with an expected start date of 1 January 2027.

The work is centered on pilot-scale HTL campaigns, wet-oxidation experiments, product separation, troubleshooting and upgrading of an existing HTL-WO pilot plant, and chemical analysis of HTL products. The successful candidate will also support full-scale experimental campaigns, data processing, scientific publications, reports, and supervision/training of MSc, BSc, and PhD students.

This position is based around the department’s state-of-the-art continuous HTL reactors at Foulum Campus, with work also in Aarhus. The project is described as highly interdisciplinary and connected to industrial collaboration and the green transition.

Ideal profile: PhD in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a related area (or near completion); experience with lab/pilot-scale chemical engineering processes; strong publication record; and practical skills in biomass/biofuel/bioproduct analysis using tools such as elemental analysis, NMR, and GC-MS. Experience with HTL, wet oxidation, pyrolysis, hydrotreating, continuous reactors, thermochemical biomass processing, and technology transfer is advantageous.

Funding and terms: fixed-term postdoc employment under Danish university salary agreements. No stipend amount is listed. Aarhus University offers research infrastructure, an interdisciplinary environment, and support services for international researchers.

Deadline: 25 October 2026.

How to apply: Submit the application in English through Aarhus University’s recruitment system. Include a CV, degree certificate, publication list, future research plan, research activity information, and teaching portfolio/verified teaching experience if applicable.
