About this position
Postdoc position in Statistical Physics of Bio-Nano Complex Matter at the Universitat de Barcelona, in the Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Faculty of Physics, Barcelona, Spain.
This postdoctoral project, Bio-Nano-SPARK, investigates hydration-mediated mechanisms that control the formation, stability, and dynamics of biomolecular condensates. The work uses a multiscale approach combining statistical physics, molecular simulations, and machine learning to understand how water structure and interfacial hydration regulate phase separation, molecular interactions, and transport in condensates.
The successful candidate will contribute to research on protein aggregation and protein liquid-liquid phase separation, working within the Statistical Physics of Bio-Nano Complex Matter Group. The position involves independent Monte Carlo free-energy calculations and molecular dynamics simulations, developing machine-learning approaches, refining theoretical models based on numerical results, comparing simulations with experiments, and contributing to group meetings, conferences, reports, and scientific manuscripts. The researcher is also expected to supervise students involved in the project.
The project is coordinated by Professor Giancarlo Franzese. The post is a full-time temporary contract (37.5 hours/week), with an estimated starting date of 15 Jan 2027. The application deadline is 13 Nov 2026 at 23:59 (Europe/Madrid).
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent and demonstrate expertise in statistical physics and computational physics of soft matter and nano-bio interactions. Required skills include Monte Carlo methods, molecular dynamics packages, basic machine learning, GPU coding, and proven fluency in English. Communication, teamwork, autonomy, and initiative are emphasized, and knowledge of high-performance computation is considered an advantage.
To apply, candidates must use the official University of Barcelona application portal and submit the requested documents, including a full CV and motivation letter. The selection process includes evaluation of CV fit, research-field experience, motivation, PhD background, and interview/other merits. Priority is given to people with disabilities in accordance with applicable Spanish law.
