About this position
Radboud University is recruiting three postdoctoral researchers for the Origins of Irreversibility project at the Radboud Center for Natural Philosophy (RCNP). The positions span mathematical physics, theoretical physics, and the history of physics, bringing together physicists, mathematicians, historians, and philosophers to study how irreversible macroscopic behaviour emerges from reversible microscopic laws.
The research themes include entropy, randomness, chaos, statistical mechanics, quantum theory, gravitational physics, holography, and the historical development of these concepts. The mathematical physics postdoc may work on large deviation theory, algorithmic randomness, ergodic theory, quantum entropy, operator algebras, and applications to statistical physics or black hole thermodynamics. The theoretical physics postdoc will focus on out-of-equilibrium gravitational and holographic systems, including horizons, gravitational entropy, Noether charge methods, holographic coarse-graining, chaos, black hole heat engines, and quantum field theory in curved spacetime. The history of physics postdoc will investigate the history of chaos, randomness, and irreversibility from nineteenth-century statistical physics to late twentieth-century chaos theory.
The project is interdisciplinary by design and encourages collaboration across fields. Postdocs will join RCNP and, depending on the position, also connect with IMAPP or CHPS at Radboud University. The team includes Klaas Landsman, Manus Visser, and Marij van Strien, among others. Applicants should have a PhD in a relevant field, a strong research record, excellent English, and a genuine interest in foundational questions and interdisciplinary work.

What's required

Candidates should have a strong research record appropriate to career stage, be able to conduct independent research, show interest in fundamental questions about entropy, irreversibility, randomness, chaos and emergence, and be willing to collaborate across disciplines. Excellent written and oral English skills are required, along with active participation in seminars, reading groups, workshops and the visitor programme.
