About this position
Postdoc / Senior Scientist opportunity at Forschungszentrum Jülich in the Institute for a Sustainable Hydrogen Economy (IHE), within the Process and Plant Engineering for Chemical Hydrogen Storage division (IHE-4).
The team is expanding its Process and Systems Assessment area and is looking for several Postdocs or Senior Scientists with different expertise profiles. The research focuses on chemical hydrogen carriers such as ammonia, methanol, methane, dimethyl ether, and liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC), with work spanning the full life cycle from synthesis and transport to conversion and application.
Core topics include techno-economic analysis (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), process modeling, mathematical optimization, industrial energy systems, and the analysis of regulatory frameworks and energy policy instruments. The role is especially relevant for candidates interested in Power-to-X, hydrogen infrastructure, CO₂ infrastructures, sustainability criteria, electricity procurement models, power purchase agreements, grid tariffs, and carbon accounting.
Applicants should have a completed degree in a relevant field such as chemical engineering, process engineering, energy engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, computer science, environmental sciences, mathematics, economics, or energy economics. A completed PhD or comparable multi-year scientific/industrial experience is required, along with proven expertise in at least one of the listed areas and strong quantitative/programming skills.
English proficiency at B2 CEFR or higher is expected; German is an advantage. The posting notes that a certificate confirming language level is ideally provided. The role is fixed-term for 2 years, paid at EG 13 TVöD-Bund, and based at Brainergy Park Jülich.
Benefits include flexible working arrangements, 30 days of vacation, a year-end bonus, pension contributions, professional development support, and health/well-being offerings. The application deadline is 2026-09-13.
