About this position

Leibniz University Hannover is recruiting for a newly established Chair of European Integration and International Relations led by Prof. Dr. Christian Freudlsperger. The post is based in the Institute of Political Science and focuses on empirical research at the intersection of European politics, European integration, and International Relations.

Two positions are advertised: a Postdoctoral Researcher in European Politics and International Relations (100%, 4 years) and a Doctoral Researcher in European Politics and International Relations (75%, 4 years). Both roles start on 1 October 2026 and are part of a research group working on quantitative data collection, empirical analysis, and computational text analysis. The postdoc role also includes developing an independent research agenda, publishing in international journals, presenting at conferences, teaching two courses per semester, and co-supervising student theses. The doctoral role includes developing an independent PhD project, contributing to the chair’s empirical research, teaching, and co-supervising student theses.

Eligibility for the postdoc includes a completed university degree in political science, public administration, data science, or a related field, plus strong quantitative research experience and coding skills in Python. Eligibility for the PhD position includes a completed master’s degree in political science, public administration, data science, or a related field, with first experience in quantitative methods and coding in R and/or Python. For both positions, the chair seeks applicants with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, self-motivation, self-organization, an international outlook, and very good English. German is helpful but not required.

Funding is provided through salaried employment under TV-L 13: the postdoc at 100% and the PhD researcher at 75%, both for four years. The ad highlights mentoring, an international working environment, and support for work-life balance. Applications are due by 17 July 2026.

To apply, send the requested documents by email to [email protected] with the correct subject line, or submit by post to the Institute of Political Science at Leibniz University Hannover.
