About this position
The Intelligent Design Optimization (IDOpt) lab and the Multidisciplinary Analysis and Design Center for Advanced Vehicles at Virginia Tech’s Kevin T. Crofton Department of Aerospace and Ocean Engineering are seeking a postdoctoral associate to work on advanced aircraft design research.
The project focuses on computational methods for aircraft conceptual design, multidisciplinary design analysis and optimization (MDAO), and model-based systems engineering (MBSE). The appointee will develop and integrate disciplinary aircraft models into MDAO workflows, with an emphasis on bringing certification considerations into the design and optimization process. A major theme of the work is requirements-driven aircraft design: connecting requirements, aircraft architecture, geometry, analysis models, and optimization workflows so that design changes can be traced and new trade studies can be run efficiently.
The research is part of a NASA-funded University Leadership Initiative and will be carried out with a multi-institutional team involving Virginia Tech, other universities, NASA, and aerospace industry partners. The project will demonstrate the methods on aircraft design studies of increasing complexity, including electrified aircraft configurations.
In addition to core research, the postdoctoral associate will help develop and release open-source research software, prepare peer-reviewed publications, present results at conferences, and mentor graduate and undergraduate researchers.
This is a research-intensive opportunity at Virginia Tech in a collaborative aerospace environment centered on certification-driven aircraft design tools and methods.

What's required
Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related field by the time of appointment, with the Ph.D. awarded within the past four years and at least one year of eligibility remaining. Required experience includes aircraft design research (conceptual or preliminary design, sizing, or multidisciplinary aircraft analysis), Python scientific computing or engineering analysis software using object-oriented programming, and aircraft design/performance simulations integrating three or more disciplines such as aerodynamics, propulsion, structures, flight dynamics, stability and control, controls, or powertrain systems. Candidates must demonstrate independent research ability, effective collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, experience presenting at an international aerospace or aviation conference, and a first-author publication in a peer-reviewed engineering or scientific journal.
