About this position
The Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation at Virginia Tech is recruiting a postdoctoral associate for an ESTCP-funded project focused on vegetation, fuel, and fire behavior tools in hardwood-dominated forest ecosystems of Virginia and the eastern United States.
The project is led by Dr. Adam Coates with Drs. Carrie Fearer, Verl Emrick, and Mark Ford serving as co-investigators. The research brings together field ecology, remote sensing, and fire science to better understand forest fuel structure and its implications for management across a wide regional footprint.
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to a multi-part project that combines traditional transect-based fuel inventories with terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Work will span hardwood-dominated locations in Virginia, including Department of War installations and bases and large areas of the George Washington-Jefferson National Forest.
Beyond fuel measurement, the project examines how TLS-derived metrics can be used to derive wildlife habitat indicators and how regional fuel inputs can improve fire behavior modeling. The final component is the development of monitoring protocols intended to strengthen fuels monitoring and management across the Commonwealth.
This position sits within Virginia Tech’s research environment in Blacksburg, a major land-grant institution with a strong emphasis on transdisciplinary, applied research. The appointment is restricted and connected to an externally funded project in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation.
