About this position

Duke University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Associate to lead research and development in healthcare XR (extended reality) within the group of Maria Gorlatova, James N. & Elizabeth H. Barton Associate Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The position is based in Durham, North Carolina, and focuses on bringing AR/VR/MR technologies into clinical practice.

The role sits at the intersection of Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and healthcare-oriented interactive systems. The postdoc will design, implement, and evaluate XR systems for healthcare applications, lead software development, mentor students, and collaborate with clinicians and healthcare researchers. The group is especially interested in candidates who are excited by the challenges of co-designing XR platforms with multidisciplinary teams and shaping the strategic direction of healthcare XR research.

Preferred experience includes publications in top XR/HCI venues such as IEEE VR, ISMAR, CHI, or UIST; development with Unity, Unreal Engine, OpenXR, or similar frameworks; systems-level work across sensing, networking, optimization, or edge/cloud integration; and machine learning for interactive or XR systems. Experience with healthcare professionals or healthcare technologies is a plus. The required degree is a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a closely related field by the start date.

This is a postdoctoral opening rather than a PhD or master's call. The application deadline listed on the formal posting is 2026-06-30, though the social post says interviews begin mid-May and the team aims to fill the position ASAP. Application materials include a CV, a 1–2 page research statement, up to 3 representative publications, and contact information for 2–3 references.

Interested candidates should apply through the Academic Jobs Online posting and review the full job description for details on responsibilities and required materials.
