About this position
Johns Hopkins University is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellow in Civil and Systems Engineering focused on wildfire resilience. The position is based in the Whiting School of Engineering and is housed in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering, with research centered on how wildfire hazards affect the built environment, critical infrastructure, and communities.
The successful candidate will join Professor Thomas Gernay and collaborate with the Multi-Hazard Resilient Structures research group and other interdisciplinary teams. The role involves developing innovative research methodologies, computational models, simulation tools, and risk-informed approaches to study structural vulnerability, fire behavior, infrastructure performance, community recovery, and resilience planning before, during, and after wildfire events.
Research themes include wildfire science, fire engineering, structural engineering, infrastructure resilience, computational mechanics, hazard modeling, and performance-based / risk-based decision-making. The fellow will conduct independent and collaborative research, analyze data, run numerical simulations, contribute to manuscripts and conference presentations, support proposal development, and help mentor students.
Eligibility requires a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong analytical and computational skills are essential, as is experience with numerical modeling, simulation, and/or scientific programming. The posting also emphasizes a publication record, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment. Preferred experience includes wildfire hazards, fire dynamics, multi-hazard engineering, disaster resilience, geospatial data, and hazard modeling tools.
The appointment is full time with a stated salary range of USD 63,480–80,000. The closing date is 2027-01-31. Applications are submitted through Interfolio using the provided portal link.
