About this position
Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellow position in the Capone Lab within the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health.
The project is a CDC-funded five-year study focused on developing and applying integrated surveillance approaches for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection in the southeastern United States. The fellow will work at the intersection of environmental health microbiology, parasitology, epidemiology, and public health surveillance.
Research activities include analysis of human and environmental samples such as wastewater, septage, soil, flies, and stool, together with microscopy and molecular methods including digital PCR. The lab’s broader research interests include public health surveillance using fecal waste streams, microbial fate and transport, the role of infrastructure in interrupting enteric pathogen transmission, and predicting public health outcomes using quantitative microbial risk assessment.
Applicants should have a PhD in environmental health, environmental engineering, environmental science, microbiology, or a related field by the time of appointment. Experience with project management, molecular microbiology methods, quantitative data analysis, fieldwork, environmental sampling, and strong communication skills is preferred. The group is especially interested in candidates who want to build an independent research profile and mentor undergraduate, master’s, and PhD students.
The position offers the chance to lead scientific work, coordinate laboratory activities, develop and optimize laboratory methods, analyze complex environmental and epidemiologic data, and pursue peer-reviewed publications and independent research questions. Additional opportunities may include travel to study sites in Virginia and Alabama and participation in domestic and international projects.
Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis, with full consideration for materials received by October 5, 2026. The expected start date is October 19, 2026. Interested candidates should submit a CV, cover letter, writing sample, and three references through the PeopleAdmin application link.
