About this position

Postdoctoral Fellow in Long-Read Transcriptomics and Multi-Omics of Neurodegeneration at the Translational Neurogenetics Unit, Center for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias (CARD), National Institute on Aging, NIH (Bethesda, MD and surrounding area).

This postdoctoral opening is centered on neuroscience, RNA biology, genetics and genomics, computational biology, and proteomics. The group, led by Dr. Kimberley Billingsley, studies how genetic risk contributes to molecular changes in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and related dementias using long-read sequencing of human brain tissue.

The fellow will lead projects combining long-read RNA sequencing, direct RNA sequencing, and proteomics in human brain. Research topics include isoform-resolved transcript maps, RNA modifications in disease, disease-relevant isoforms at the protein level, and links between structural variants/repeat expansions and transcript/protein changes. The role is mainly computational, with optional wet-lab work. The team collaborates with scientists at Northeastern University, the University of Cambridge, UC Santa Cruz, Baylor College of Medicine, and Oxford Nanopore Technologies, and has access to Oxford Nanopore sequencing, NIH Biowulf, and cloud computing.

Eligibility highlights: PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology, or a related field; fewer than 5 years of postdoctoral experience; strong experience with high-throughput sequencing analysis and Python or R in Linux/HPC. Experience with long-read sequencing, transcriptomics, direct RNA sequencing, proteomics, or neuroscience/neurodegenerative disease is a plus. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible, and NIH welcomes foreign nationals except those on the specified watch list.

How to apply: Send a cover letter, CV with publication list, and contact details for three references to [email protected]. The vacancy page is available at the NIH Research Training site.

Location: Bethesda, Maryland, United States.

What's required

Applicants should have a PhD in genomics, bioinformatics, computational biology, molecular biology or a related field, with fewer than 5 years of postdoctoral experience. Experience analysing high-throughput sequencing data and programming in Python or R in a Linux or HPC environment is required. Experience with long-read sequencing (Oxford Nanopore or PacBio), transcriptomics, direct RNA sequencing or proteomics is a plus, as is a background in neuroscience or neurodegenerative disease. U.S. citizens and permanent residents are eligible to apply; NIH also welcomes foreign nationals except those from countries/entities on the specified special watch list. Candidates are subject to a background investigation.

How to apply

Email Dr. Kimberley Billingsley with a cover letter describing your research experience and interests, a CV with publication list, and contact details for three references. Use the contact email [email protected].
