About this position
UNSW is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellow position on the ARC Discovery Project Artists and Generative AI: Copyright and Private Regulation of Creativity. The role is based at the UNSW Paddington Campus, Sydney, NSW, Australia, and is a full-time fixed-term appointment from May 2027 until 3 November 2028.
The successful candidate will join a project that examines generative AI, AI media generation, system behaviour, and content or “inspiration” attribution. The work involves systematic computational analysis of generative AI systems and datasets, with an emphasis on machine learning, data science, high-performance computing, and quantitative/qualitative analysis. The position sits in the School of Art & Design and reports to Professor Oliver Bown.
Eligible applicants should hold a PhD in a related field such as AI, Computer Science, Data Science, or another discipline involving strong quantitative computing skills. The ad also welcomes candidates from Creative Arts or Social Science backgrounds if they can demonstrate advanced computing and data processing proficiency. Experience with machine learning, benchmarking or analysing ML systems, dataset construction, computational analysis of cultural materials, high-performance computing, or AI agents is desirable, along with programming ability, a strong publication record, communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines.
Funding is provided through a salaried postdoctoral appointment at Level B, with remuneration of AUD 133,065–156,864 plus 17% superannuation and leave loading. UNSW also highlights career development, extra leave over the Christmas period, and staff discounts/entitlements.
To apply, submit a CV, a 1–2 page cover letter, and a separate document addressing the selection criteria through the online application portal before 7 December 2026. Applications sent by email will not be accepted. UNSW states that it cannot sponsor international candidates for this role, so applicants must already have unlimited Australian work rights for the duration of the contract.
