About this position
Harvard University’s Laboratory for Particle Physics and Cosmology invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow working with Rubin Observatory data and forefront questions in fundamental physics.
The successful candidate will contribute to one or more areas: precise flux calibration, including correction for astrophysical extinction, atmospheric transmission, and instrumental sensitivity versus wavelength; improvement of the Rubin system’s delivered image quality; and data-analysis methods using Type Ia supernovae to investigate the nature of dark energy. The group is particularly interested in applying artificial intelligence to accelerate progress in observational astrophysics and cosmology. The fellow may use 20% of their time to pursue other research interests.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in physics or astronomy by the expected August 2027 start date and must have experience with optical astronomy methods applied to important questions in physics. Experience using AI tools in observational astrophysics is desirable. Rubin Observatory data experience and existing membership in the Dark Energy Science Collaboration are advantageous.
The initial appointment is one year, with possible annual renewals subject to performance, funding, research needs, and approvals. Salary is listed as $70,000–$85,000. Applications receiving full consideration by November 30, 2026, must include a cover letter, CV with no more than six publications, a one-page explanation of the importance of selected papers, research-interests statement, and three professional references. Three recommendation letters must also arrive by the deadline.
