About this position
HJF is advertising a Postdoctoral Fellow position in Bethesda, Maryland, United States in support of the Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics department at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. This is a research-focused postdoctoral opening for scientists interested in phylogenomics, entomology, bioinformatics, evolutionary biology, ecology, public health, genomics, and environmental niche modeling.
The project is NSF-funded and aims to build the first integrated phylogenomic, morphological, and ecological framework for the entire Anopheline mosquito subfamily. The fellow will work at the intersection of mosquito systematics, public-health entomology, functional morphology, and evolutionary ecology. The role includes genome assembly, phylogenomic inference, sample preparation, DNA extraction, library preparation, sequencing workflows, species-tree analysis, gene-tree discordance, introgression detection, and integrative species delimitation.
Additional research duties include micro-CT scanning, 3D segmentation of thoracic musculature and wing architecture, biomechanical trait calculation, environmental niche hypervolume modeling, and analysis of occurrence, remote-sensing, and land-cover data. The fellow will co-lead peer-reviewed manuscripts, mentor students, collaborate with a research team, and engage with mosquito-surveillance and public-health stakeholders.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in a relevant field such as evolutionary biology, entomology, phylogenetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, or ecology. Competitive candidates should have experience with mosquito taxonomy, molecular biology, phylogenomic pipelines, archival or ancient DNA, museum specimens, 3D morphometrics, CT segmentation, GIS, remote sensing, and high-throughput sequencing data. Strong scripting ability, HPC familiarity, publication record, and mentoring experience are required. The posting also notes the need to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust background check.
Compensation is listed at $52,800–$70,000 per year, plus a comprehensive benefits package. Apply through the HJF career portal before the stated deadline of 2026-10-29.
