About this position
The National Research Council Canada is offering a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Ottawa through its Digital Technologies organizational unit. The project focuses on uncertainty quantification and calibration for large language models (LLMs), with applications to trustworthy artificial intelligence and human-AI interaction.
The research will develop methods for measuring uncertainty in both LLM-generated outputs and intermediate model representations. Potential applications include hallucination detection, deception detection, synthetic content detection, mitigation of safety failure modes, improved evaluation, and trustworthy decision-support systems. The work is suitable for publication in leading computational linguistics and machine learning venues, including ACL, ICLR, and ICML. Fellows may also interact with related research in LLM interpretability and evaluation, with potential collaborations involving Mila and Cohere.
Applicants need a PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Physics, or a related field, awarded on or after July 1, 2024, or expected within six months of appointment. Relevant experience includes AI research, deep learning tools and libraries, experimental design, scientific writing, and publications at high-calibre venues. Knowledge of uncertainty quantification or mechanistic interpretability is an asset.
The position offers CAD 83,985–116,641 annually, benefits, and a travel fund. Applications must include a resume, one-page statement of interest, PhD transcript, and publication list. The closing date is January 7, 2027, at 23:59 Eastern Time.
