About this position

The Integrated Devices, Electronics, And Systems (IDEAS) Group at ETH Zürich, led by Prof. Dr. Hua Wang, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a highly interdisciplinary project at the interface of biology, molecular systems, and CMOS bioelectronics/biosensors. This position focuses on biological and molecular assays and bio-experiments for bioelectronics and biosensors using CMOS integrated circuit chips. The research combines molecular and electrochemical assays with cell biology on micro-/nano-electronic devices, aiming to develop and support experimental work across a range of CMOS bioelectronics and biosensors projects.

The IDEAS group has developed advanced CMOS platforms with dense arrays of electrodes and multi-modality active pixels for sensing and actuation. These platforms enable long-term culture and sensing of biological systems, including neurons, human stem-cell-derived cells, and animal-based cells, as well as molecular or chemical functionalities such as electrochemical measurements and on-chip molecular processes. The successful candidate will contribute to the development and operation of these platforms, supporting research across diverse applications and helping to shape experimental workflows within a collaborative and innovative environment.

Responsibilities include long-term culture and maintenance of neurons and other cell-based assays on CMOS chips, working with human stem-cell-derived cells and animal-based cells, developing stable cell-microelectrode interfaces, designing and executing molecular and electrochemical experiments, implementing molecular and chemical workflows, and performing biological and molecular characterization using microscopy, fluorescence-based assays, and electrochemical measurements. The candidate will also work closely with CMOS electronics researchers, contribute to teaching activities, present results at meetings and conferences, and prepare peer-reviewed publications.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, chemistry, electrochemistry, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, or related fields. Experience in long-term cell cultures, particularly neuronal cultures, and cellular assays using human stem-cell-derived cells and/or animal-based cells is required. A strong experimental background in molecular chemistry, electrochemistry, or related chemical systems is essential. Experience with bioelectronic platforms, microelectrode arrays, or Organ-on-Chip systems is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate excellent work ethics, scientific rigor, collaborative team culture, ability to work independently and as part of a team, excellent organizational skills, high reliability, strong track record in scientific work, communication, and publications. Fluent oral and written communication skills in English are essential.

The position is fully funded for an initial period of 1-2 years, with the possibility of extension based on performance and available funding.
