About this position

Stanford University is advertising an institutionally funded postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Frederick Dirbas in the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology.

The project centers on FLASH radiotherapy, breast cancer, radiobiology, and tumor biology. The fellow will work in a collaborative team on murine models to study molecular, cellular, and functional changes after FLASH irradiation, comparing FLASH versus conventional radiotherapy in normal tissue and xenograft models. The work includes animal experiments, tissue analysis, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, RNA/protein assays, and computational analysis.

Relevant research interests include cancer biology, mouse models, tumor immunology, single-cell RNA sequencing, bioinformatics, and proteomics. Applicants with experience in rodent handling, small-animal irradiation, imaging, cancer stem cells, radiobiology, R/Python, DESeq2/edgeR, Seurat/Scanpy, ImageJ/Fiji, or QuPath are especially encouraged to apply.

Eligibility: PhD or MD/PhD in Cancer Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics, Cancer Stem Cells, Immunology, or a related field. Strong in vivo and bench experience is required, along with rigorous record-keeping, grant-writing ability, and willingness to work flexible hours for irradiation experiments.

Funding: The position is institutionally funded and pays at least the Stanford University postdoctoral minimum salary; the FY27 minimum is $79,056. The appointment term is 2 years with possible extension.

How to apply: Submit a cover letter, CV with publication list, and contact information for three references. Applications should be sent to the contacts listed in the post: [email protected], [email protected], and [email protected].

What's required

Applicants must have a PhD or MD/PhD in Cancer Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics, Cancer Stem Cells, Immunology, or a relevant discipline. Strong experience is required in animal and in vivo work, including rodent handling, orthotopic mammary fat pad implantation, syngeneic and xenograft models, tumor measurement, anesthesia, irradiation positioning, survival surgery, necropsy, tissue harvest, breeding colony management, PCR genotyping, and blood collection. Bench skills required include histology, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, flow cytometry, RNA/protein extraction, qPCR, Western blot, and mammalian cell culture. Applicants should also have rigorous record-keeping, grant-writing ability, and capacity to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with mouse research, small animal irradiation/imaging, cancer cell biology, radiobiology, bulk/single-cell RNA sequencing, and computational analysis is particularly encouraged.

How to apply

Prepare a cover letter, current CV with publication list, and contact information for three references. Send application materials to Dr. Frederick Dirbas, Anisha Abreu, and Mark Le using the emails listed in the post.
