About this position

Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) is inviting applications for one or more postdoctoral positions in High-Energy Astrophysics within the High-Energy Astrophysics Group led by Prof. Kirpal Nandra. The group works on a broad set of research topics in astronomy and astrophysics, including observational cosmology, supermassive black hole evolution, accreting compact objects, high-energy transients, and the hot interstellar/circumgalactic/intergalactic medium.

Research themes mentioned in the call include cosmological constraints from cluster surveys, galaxy group and cluster astrophysics, large-scale structure and the cosmic web, AGN and host-galaxy evolution using eROSITA surveys with SDSS-V and 4MOST follow-up, X-ray binaries and ultraluminous X-ray sources, fast X-ray transients from Einstein Probe, tidal disruption events, quasi-periodic eruptions, and studies of the eROSITA bubbles, the Milky Way halo, nearby-galaxy circumgalactic media, and warm-hot gas in cosmic filaments.

The position is based at MPE in Garching, Germany, and is available immediately for a three-year term. The salary follows the German public-sector pay scale (TVöD Bund), up to EG14 depending on qualifications and professional experience.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have a Ph.D. in astronomy or astrophysics completed or imminent, plus a publication record relevant to the listed areas. Experience with X-ray data analysis or interpretation is desirable.

To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, publication list, and a brief one-page research statement in English as PDFs through the online portal. Three reference letters should also be sent by the deadline. The application deadline is 2026-12-01.
