About this position
The University of Basel Department of Biomedicine is offering a 100% postdoctoral position in leukemia immunology and cellular metabolism within the Blood Cancer Biology and Immunotherapy group led by Prof. Petya Apostolova.
The researcher will investigate how cellular metabolism shapes leukemia persistence, immune evasion, and anti-leukemia immunity. The project is funded through the ERC Starting Grant LIFE, which focuses on targeting bioactive lipids to improve leukemia immune recognition and outcomes after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Research may address metabolic adaptation of leukemia under therapeutic pressure, effects of leukemia-derived metabolites on immune-cell function, and the identification and validation of metabolic mechanisms and therapeutic targets. Methods include in vivo leukemia and transplantation models, mass spectrometry-based metabolomics and lipidomics, CRISPR and functional genomics screens, spectral flow cytometry, cell sorting, bulk and single-cell transcriptomics, spatial technologies, and functional immune and metabolic assays.
The successful candidate will design and interpret mechanistic experiments, conduct animal studies, analyze scientific data, develop collaborations, mentor PhD and MSc students, and contribute to publications, meetings, and grant applications. Applicants need a PhD or equivalent in cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology, hematology, or a related field, along with relevant experimental expertise and strong English communication skills. Experience with leukemia, tumor immunology, metabolism, CRISPR screening, or histology is advantageous.
The appointment starts on 1 February 2027 or by agreement and lasts one year, with possible extension and long-term prospects. Applications should include a CV and publication list, a key original publication, a brief research and motivation statement, and contact details for two to three references.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree in cancer biology, immunology, molecular biology, hematology, or a related discipline. Candidates should have a strong conceptual and experimental background in tumor biology and/or immunology; substantial hands-on experience with in vivo mouse tumor models, ideally hematological cancer models; willingness to perform animal experiments; extensive experience with spectral flow cytometry and molecular biology; a strong experimental track record, ideally including a high-quality first-author publication; ability to independently design, execute, and interpret mechanistic experiments; excellent English communication skills; and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team. Experience in leukemia research, tumor immunology, metabolism, CRISPR screening, or histology is advantageous but not required.
