About this position

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center, Polish Academy of Sciences (CAMK PAN) in Warsaw, Poland. The project, led by Dr. Aleksandra Olejak, focuses on stars near massive black holes as electromagnetic sources and future gravitational-wave targets for LISA. The successful candidate will work closely with CAMK PAN researchers, including Dr. Abbas Askar and Dr. Verónica Vázquez Aceves, and with international collaborators.

The core scientific theme is multimessenger astrophysics of stellar EMRIs/IMRIs. Research directions may include detailed stellar and binary evolution calculations (for example with MESA), semi-analytical modelling, tidal interactions and tidally excited oscillations, hydrodynamical simulations of stellar encounters with intermediate-mass and supermassive black holes, and studies of gravitational-wave and electromagnetic signals from star–black-hole systems. The project also connects theory with observed high-energy transients such as ULXs/HLXs, QPEs, QPOs, and exotic tidal disruption events.

The position is well suited to candidates with a background in astronomy, astrophysics, or physics, especially in stellar evolution, binary evolution, gravitational-wave astrophysics, hydrodynamics, tidal disruption events, or related modelling and observational work. The successful applicant is expected to contribute to and help lead the exploration of stellar EMRIs/IMRIs as electromagnetic and gravitational-wave sources, while also developing partly independent research ideas aligned with the group’s expertise.

The appointment is for up to 30 months, with a flexible start date but no later than October 2027. The position is based at CAMK PAN in Warsaw, Poland. Salary is approximately 13,000 PLN gross per month (around 9,800 PLN net, depending on tax situation). Dedicated funding is available for conference participation, research visits, collaborative activities, and computing equipment.

Applicants should hold a PhD (or equivalent) by the expected starting date and have excellent English. Applications should include a CV, publication list, research statement of up to 3 pages, PhD diploma or expected completion date, and at least two recommendation letters sent directly to the contact email. The deadline is 15 November 2026.

What's required

Applicants should hold a PhD in astrophysics, astronomy, physics, or a closely related field by the expected starting date. Excellent English is required. The post advertises a research experience level of 4–10 years and is particularly suitable for candidates with backgrounds in stellar and binary evolution, hydrodynamical simulations of stellar interactions, stellar oscillations and tidal interactions, modelling or observations of electromagnetic counterparts and tidal disruption events, or gravitational-wave astrophysics.

How to apply

Send a CV, publication list, brief research statement (max 3 pages), PhD diploma or expected completion date, and arrange for at least two recommendation letters to be sent directly to [email protected]. Submit the application by 2026-11-15 with the subject line “Postdoctoral Position – Multimessenger Astrophysics.”
