About this position
Postdoctoral position in Physical Oceanography at the Department of Marine Sciences, University of Gothenburg, Sweden.
This three-year postdoc is part of the ERC Starting Grant SOFIA (Southern Ocean fine-scale ocean dynamics and storm impacts on air-sea heat exchange) and sits within the Polar Gliders Research Group. The project focuses on Southern Ocean fine-scale dynamics, including satellite-observed vertical velocities, vertical heat transport, ocean fronts, eddies, filaments, and air-sea heat exchange.
The successful candidate will combine novel satellite data with high-resolution in-situ observations such as gliders, uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs), and ship-based measurements to produce circumpolar maps, validate reconstructions, and study seasonal and inter-annual variability. The work also supports the planned field campaign Pulse of the Weddell Sea and may involve expedition participation and autonomous platform piloting.
Eligibility and requirements: a doctoral degree (or equivalent) is required, with a PhD in physical oceanography, meteorology, geophysical fluid dynamics, applied mathematics/physics, remote sensing, or a closely related field. Applicants should have strong ocean dynamics knowledge, experience with large datasets, Python or similar programming, peer-reviewed publications, and strong English communication skills. Experience with satellite remote sensing, altimetry, in-situ ocean observations, and HPC is advantageous.
Funding and employment: fixed-term employment for 3 years, full time (100%). Salary is individually set by the University of Gothenburg.
How to apply: submit the application via the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal. Include a cover letter (max 1 page), CV (max 2 pages) with publications, doctoral degree certificate or proof of expected PhD defense date, and contact details for two referees. Applications must be received by 2026-10-29 and all documents should be in English.

What's required
Applicants must have a doctoral degree or equivalent, and specifically a PhD in physical oceanography, meteorology, geophysical fluid dynamics, applied mathematics/physics, remote sensing, or a closely related field. Essential requirements include a solid understanding of ocean dynamics and geophysical fluid dynamics, experience analyzing large datasets such as satellite, observational, or numerical model output, strong scientific programming skills in Python or similar, a publication record appropriate to career stage, and strong verbal and written English communication skills. Experience with satellite remote sensing, wide-swath or along-track altimetry, in-situ observations such as gliders, Argo floats, moorings or ship-based measurements, and high-performance computing is advantageous. Recent PhD graduates are preferred, normally within three years of degree completion unless special grounds apply.
How to apply
Apply through the University of Gothenburg recruitment portal using the Apply button on the vacancy notice. Submit all documents in English, including a cover letter, CV with publications, doctoral degree certificate or proof of expected PhD defense date, and contact details for two referees. Ensure the application is complete and submitted by the deadline.
