About this position
Stockholm University’s Department of Meteorology (MISU) is advertising a PhD student position in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography with a focus on mixed-phase cloud processes.
The project studies how cloud composition, cloud-scale dynamics, turbulence, and atmospheric waves influence whether clouds cool or warm the Earth. The successful candidate will analyze more than 800 hours of aircraft-based wind and cloud particle measurements collected during field campaigns in the US, Europe, the Caribbean, off northwest Africa, between Australia and Antarctica, and near Svalbard.
The work is strongly data-driven and will involve literature review, detailed understanding of aircraft instrumentation, and analysis of measurements from many aircraft-mounted instruments. All analysis will be done in Python. The project begins with well-defined questions about statistical relationships between cloud particle properties and cloud dynamics, and may later expand into atmospheric modelling, climate connections, and/or machine learning.
Eligibility: applicants must meet general doctoral entry requirements and specific subject requirements in meteorology, oceanography, physics, or chemistry, plus mathematics and an independent degree project. English proficiency equivalent to English 6/Level 2 is required. Prior Python experience is desirable but not mandatory.
Funding/employment: this is a fixed-term doctoral employment at Stockholm University, full time, normally up to four years. No stipend amount is stated.
Application deadline: 3 November 2026. Apply via Stockholm University’s recruitment system and include a personal letter, CV, and requested attachments.
