About this position

Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden is recruiting two postdoctoral positions in applications of microcombs within the ERC Advanced Grant project ProSync at the Integrated Ultrafast Photonics Laboratory / Photonics Laboratory. The project sits at the intersection of integrated photonics, high-speed electronics, optical communications, precision metrology, and optical clocks.

One postdoc will focus on microcombs for high-speed optical communications, developing microcomb-based multiwavelength sources, silicon-photonic transmitter/receiver integration, coherent wavelength-division multiplexing, optoelectronic synchronization, and high-speed transceiver experiments.

The second postdoc will focus on microcombs for optical clocks and precision metrology, developing octave-spanning self-referenced microcombs, optical-frequency division, comb stabilization, phase and timing noise characterization, and metrological experiments linking ultrastable optical references to microwave frequencies.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or a closely related field by the time of appointment. Strong experimental research experience is required in either coherent optical communications / high-speed transceivers / DSP or precision metrology / ultrafast optics / optical frequency combs / optical clocks. The post also asks for a strong publication record, independent experimental ability, excellent English communication, and collaborative skills in an international interdisciplinary environment.

Desirable experience includes scientific programming and automation (Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW), numerical modelling, supervision or teaching, integrated photonic device characterization, coherent optical transmission, silicon-photonic design tools, FPGA-based transceiver platforms, optical-comb stabilization, self-referencing, ultrastable lasers, low-noise microwave generation, and feedback control.

The position is a temporary full-time postdoctoral employment for two years with the possibility of a one-year extension. It requires physical presence throughout the employment. Chalmers offers employee benefits, a dynamic research environment in Gothenburg, and support such as Swedish courses for international staff.

Deadline: 30 November 2026. How to apply: submit the application in English as PDF files via the online application form. Include a CV with publications and teaching experience, plus a personal letter explaining which project you are applying for and your research background and goals. Email applications will not be considered.

What's required

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Photonics, or a closely related field, or an equivalent foreign degree, by the time the employment decision is made. Required experience includes experimental research in either fiber-optic communication systems or precision metrology and ultrafast optics, a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals, the ability to plan, conduct, and analyse experimental research independently, strong written and verbal English skills, and the ability to collaborate in an international interdisciplinary environment. Meritorious experience includes recent PhD completion within the last three years, scientific programming and automation (e.g. Python, MATLAB, LabVIEW), numerical modelling, supervision or teaching experience, and experience with integrated photonic devices. Additional profile-specific experience is desirable in coherent optical transmission, WDM, silicon photonics, FPGA-based transceivers, optical frequency-comb stabilization, self-referencing, optical-frequency division, ultrastable lasers, optical clocks, phase noise, frequency instability, timing jitter, and feedback control.

How to apply

Prepare the application in English as PDF files, including a comprehensive CV with publications and teaching experience plus a personal letter stating which of the two projects you are applying for and why. Submit through the application form on the vacancy page; incomplete applications and email submissions will not be considered.
